How the price is worked out
eBay charges a final value fee on the total sale: your item price, the shipping you charge and the buyer's sales tax. Most categories charge 13.6% plus $0.40 per order without a Store ($0.30 on orders of $10 or less). Basic Store subscribers and up pay less in most categories.
Because the fee grows with the price, and some categories switch to a different rate above a price (athletic shoes from $150, handbags over $2,000), there's no single formula. The calculator tries prices to the cent and picks the lowest one where eBay's payout, minus your item cost and shipping, reaches your target.
Frequently asked questions
What price do I need to make $15 profit on eBay?
It depends on your costs and the category. For an item that cost $12, with $8 shipping charged, an $8 label and 7% sales tax (clothing, no eBay Store), list it at $33.43. eBay's fees come to $6.43, eBay pays you $35.00, and $15.00 is left after your costs.
What is the break-even price?
The lowest price at which you don't lose money once eBay's fees, the item cost and shipping are paid. For an item that cost $12, with $8 shipping charged, an $8 label and 7% sales tax (clothing, no eBay Store), it's $15.87. Below that, every sale costs you money.
What's the difference between ROI and profit margin?
ROI is profit divided by what you paid for the item: a $12 item that makes $15.00 is a 125.0% ROI. Margin is profit divided by what the buyer paid you for the item and shipping: $15.00 out of $41.43 is a 36.2% margin. Resellers sourcing cheap items usually think in ROI.
Why can't I just add 13.6% to my costs?
Because eBay charges its fee on the final total, not on your costs: the item price, the shipping you charge and the buyer's sales tax. Raising the price raises the fee too, and some categories change rate at a price threshold. This calculator searches for the exact lowest price, to the cent, that reaches your target.
