Frequently asked questions
How much does PayPal charge to receive a payment?
For US sellers receiving a commercial payment in dollars, PayPal charges 3.49% + $0.49 on PayPal, Venmo and Guest Checkout payments, and 2.99% + $0.49 on standard credit and debit card payments. On $100.00 that's $3.98 and $3.48.
Does PayPal charge an extra fee for international payments?
Yes. For payments from buyers in other countries, the domestic fee applies plus an additional 1.50%. On $100.00 through PayPal that's $5.48 in total.
How much should I charge to cover PayPal's fees?
Use the "What to charge" result above. To keep $100.00 from a PayPal payment, charge $104.12: the fees on that come to $4.12. Adding the percentage to your price isn't enough, because the fee is also charged on the amount you add.
Does PayPal return its fees on a refund?
No. PayPal's fee page says: "If you refund a Commercial Transaction or an Invoicing Transaction payment, there are no fees to make the refund, but the fees you originally paid to receive the payment are not returned to you."
Are invoices cheaper than regular PayPal payments?
No. Creating and sending an invoice is free, but the fees when the buyer pays are the same: 3.49% + $0.49 for PayPal, Venmo or Guest Checkout and 2.99% + $0.49 for cards and Apple Pay.
Is the fee charged on shipping and sales tax?
PayPal's fee page doesn't say what the percentage is based on. This calculator charges it on the total the buyer pays, so enter the full amount including shipping and tax. To confirm, compare it with a recent sale in your PayPal activity.
What isn't included?
US sellers receiving US dollars only. Currency conversion (4.00% for most conversions), other currencies, Pay Later, QR codes, bank (ACH) payments, chargeback fees and PayPal's fees for sending money aren't covered.
